N.C. Utilities Commission Weighs How to Meet Poultry Waste Requirement
The N.C. Utilities Commission has one more issue* to address regarding the poultry waste requirement.
The state’s electric utilities have asked for approval to meet the poultry waste requirement based on a pro-rata share of retail sales. That means a utility that provides one percent of retail power sales in North Carolina would be required to meet one percent of the state requirement for poultry waste power. Under this example, that would equate to an initial generation of 1% of 170,000 megawatt hours (i.e. 1,700 megawatt hours) from poultry waste in 2012. We have estimated that this modest requirement would represent slightly more than 0.1% of each utility’s total retail sales for 2012.
The N.C. Utilities Commission appears inclined to approve this request, but have asked for comments on this issue and will receive them until February 26, 2010.
